IDEAL PLACE FOR A DISTILLERY South-east Scotland is an ideal place to set up a distillery, as the fine Lowland agricultural soil produces some of the best barley in Scotland. Founded in 1837 by the Rate brothers, Glenkinchie distillery is sited near the pretty village of Pencaitland in the Lammermuir Hills. ![]() Proximity to the hills provided easy access to the wonderfully soft water which has its source there. In addition, with Edinburgh situated conveniently nearby, the brothers were able to take advantage of the market for the fine whisky in that area. | RARITY AND TRANQUILITY Glenkinchie has not been widely available in the past as a single Malt, and this rarity makes the discovery of its character even more enjoyable. Lowland Malts are deservedly a temperaments reflect the tranquility of the surrounding farmlands - sheltered, green slopes and soft, sweet water. It is the water that flows from the Lammermuir Hills that is used in the making of Glenkinchie.
